In order to study in Canada, most international students must obtain a Canadian Study Permit. This requirement generally applies to those students who plan to study in Canada for more than 6 months.

To apply for a Canada Student Visa (study permit), students must first enrol and be accepted to study at a Canadian educational institution. Students who wish to obtain a Canada student visa may apply at the Canadian visa office that is responsible for their country of residence.

Canadian Study Permits are issued by Canadian immigration officials in cases where applications to study in Canada satisfy immigration requirements for such applications. In addition to correctly completing application forms, an applicant must also submit compelling supporting documents, as well as pay government fees for processing of Canadian Study Permit application.

With a valid Study Permit, an individual may:

  • study for more than six months

  • work part-time up to 20 hours per week and work full time during scheduled breaks

  • apply to renew the Study Permit from within Canada, if they decide to continue studying in Canada

Spousal Open Work Permit of International Students:

Spouse of an international student may apply for an Open Work permit. An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific. It allows the international student’s spouse or common-law partner to accept any job offer with any employer.

After graduation, students can choose to stay in Canada to live and work under the Post-Graduate Work Permit. It helps students in gaining valuable Canadian work experience. Canadian work experience in the national occupational code that falls under Skill type 0, skill level A, or skill level B that is obtained through the Post Graduate Work Permit helps graduates to qualify for Permanent Residence in Canada.

Common Mistakes in Student Visa Applications

It is worth noting that many student visa applicants subsequently have their applications refused. Many of these applicants have prepared and filed their own applications, without the expertise of a legal representative. Common mistakes resulting in refusal of an application include:

  1. Incomplete application forms

  2. Improper explanation letter

  3. Misrepresentation or incorrect information

  4. Lack of financial support proof

  5. Not enough proof of ties to your home country

  6. Using an unauthorized representative

There are numerous other reasons for refusal cited by the visa officers, the above provides a small insight into the level of scrutiny your application will receive.
